The Best Accountants Trust Their Gut (Not Just the Numbers)

Anik J. Malenfant Season 1 Episode 6

There's something most people don't know about the best financial advisors, the sharpest accountants, and the portfolio managers who consistently beat the market:

They don't just trust the numbers. They trust their gut.

Chrissy Hollis is a Chartered Accountant and CPA. When she became the sole income earner for her family while carrying debt, most people would have panicked and hustled harder. Instead, every time scarcity kicked in, she used it as data—a red flag to get still, breathe, and let the right action reveal itself.

Three years later? Debt-free. Business growing every year. With more peace than she's ever known.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why scarcity is information, not a directive—and how to read it
  • The moment Chrissy launched her business in March 2020 despite everyone telling her no
  • How she navigates high-stakes decisions from peace instead of panic
  • Why 5 minutes of intentional stillness outperforms 5 hours of grinding
  • The unconscious pattern that kept her stuck (and how breaking it led to her biggest revenue jump)

Featured Quote: "I get more done now in less time than I ever did in the grind." — Anik Malenfant

The Bottom Line: When you start your day grounded—hydrated, walked, still—your nervous system has capacity. You can deep listen, see root problems, and have hard conversations without getting triggered. When you start with coffee and panic, you work twice as hard to get half the results.

Peace doesn't mean everything is easy. It means you're grounded enough to handle what's hard.

[00:00:00]

Anik Malenfant: There's something most people don't know about the best financial advisors, the sharpest accountants, the portfolio managers who consistently beat the market. They don't just trust the numbers, they trust their gut And I spent years working in finance before I became a coach, and I watched this play out over and over.

The analyst who only looked at the spreadsheets. They missed Enron. They jumped on mortgage backed securities. They followed that data right off a cliff. But the ones [00:01:00] who could feel when something was off, the ones who said, the numbers look perfect, but something just doesn't sit right. They protected their clients.

They could feel what was coming. But here's the reality numbers. Tell you what happened. Your intuition tells you what to do next, and today's guess is living proof. Chrissy Hollis is a chartered accountant and CPA. She works with spreadsheets, cashflow projections, balance sheets, the most logic driven left brain work there is, and she'll be the first to tell you.

If you're only reading the numbers, you're missing half the story. What I love about Chrissy is that she takes the most rigid, analytical work, accounting, finance spreadsheets, and she shows you how intuition makes you better at it.Not Instead of the numbers, , and this conversation is proof that the framework that we are teaching values, [00:02:00] intuition, energetic alignment, and strategic execution, it works everywhere, even in finance, I would say, especially in finance.

So let's dive in. Chrissy. Welcome to your Soul- led Business podcast.

Chrissy Hollis: Thank you, Annik. I'm so excited about this conversation. This is what I live for.

Anik Malenfant: I love it. I know we were already starting off and I thought we should hit record because all of the goodness is already coming out.

So I do have a first question for you. So, Chrissy, let's talk right about it 'cause you brought it in. You've said that the stillbirth of your first child revealed how much you were living by other people's expectation. I know so many of us can really relate to living by other people's metrics.

How did that realization shape the way that you approach your business and your life today, especially in an industry like accounting, that's often so driven by those external standards and metrics.

Chrissy Hollis: [00:03:00] The doctor said there was no heartbeat. It was like everything stood, stood still, and my whole life flashed before me and realized how much I was living everybody else's expectations and not mine. And from there to heal the grief. I went inside, then out to heal the grief instead of looking outside of myself for the answer on how to get through it.

So it really, what changed was, instead of seeking the answer and reading my environment and reading the people around me of what I should do, I went inwards to say, oh, this is what I need to do and do that. So that was the biggest shift that changed everything.

Anik Malenfant: Wow. Such a deep loss and turning inward to really asking those important questions of like, what do I really want? What do I need? What is my inner world sharing with me?

So I love that you followed that guidance and you took that time of [00:04:00] clarity to really connect to yourself and your body, to support you in choosing the path forward that led you to where you are now living in your success and alignment, which is such a beautiful thing to see.

I wanted you to share a little bit about when you said you became the sole income earner for your family while carrying debt. Now, most people would panic and hustle, but what I love about what you're sharing is that you navigated it intuitively. What did that look like in practice? And were there moments when doubt and fear still crept in?

Chrissy Hollis: So to give some context, my husband left his job in June, 2022. I had lost my mom and my grandmother in April, 2022. I was deep in grief. My husband left his job, which was a blessing for our family.

But scarcity set in, I'm human, right? And we had a debt load and scarcity was the number one emotion

[00:05:00] I knew I needed space that summer, so we took my in-laws camper and put it on a campground by the ocean. And we spent most of our time there. I worked part-time and every time scarcity would kick in, I would use it as a red flag I need to get still, bring my attention inwards and breathe this scarcity out of my body.

I would make a decision. I would follow and it's so interesting. It always worked out and sometimes it was very unexpected and very last minute.

So here we are, 2025, three years later I'm still the sole income earner and we've got rid of all commercial debt.

Anik Malenfant: Okay, pause for a second because what Chrissy just described, this is pillar two in action. Intuition as strategic intelligence. Let me translate what just happened here. Chrissy was facing what most of us would call a logic problem, sole income [00:06:00] earner. Debt load billed for two mortgage payments, unclear some weeks.

Most people in that situation would panic and hustle, grind harder. Take any client, say yes to everything. But Chrissy, she did something different. She recognized the scarcity in her body, and she used it as data, not as a directive. This is the relief versus resonance framework that I taught in episode four.

Relief says, take action now to make this feeling go away. Resonance says, get still breathe. Let the right action reveal itself. Chrissy chose resonance and as a result, debt-free in three years. And that's not luck. That's intuitive discernment. And here's what I really want you to hear. Chrissy is a CPA, A financial professional.

Someone trained to trust the numbers above all [00:07:00] else, and even she will tell you the numbers are important, but they're not the whole story. Your intuition knows things, your spreadsheet doesn't. Alright, let's keep going because what Chrissy shares next is gonna blow your mind.

What made you listen to your intuition and launch your own business despite the high level uncertainty?

Chrissy Hollis: That was like a moment that I'm gonna remember for the rest of my life. So as you described, I was in a moment of chaos. So my husband was working days then and he was at work and daycares were closed. So the kids were running around, I remember.

Anik Malenfant: Yeah.

Chrissy Hollis: Right. Kids were running around. I have management staring back at me on Zoom going like, what are we gonna do?

Like nobody's faced this, right? And then I just have this like calm amongst the storm moment of like, you're playing small, helping one owner, it's time. And I was like, oh, okay. And when we were [00:08:00] discussing, I didn't give any solution. I knew that they knew what to do and I was just reminding them, okay, every time that we've made a decision we focus on this is our mission, our vision within the business, what lines of revenue can we bring in within the rules?

We have to keep authentic. And still bring in money. you know, I'm talking to like, just to paint the picture here, I'm talking to men who work in warehouses. Okay. I'm not talking, you know, to a group of women around the table. I'm the only woman on the call, right? And then they just get curious and they get out of the scarcity and out of the panic going, oh, okay, this is creativity time.

This is like brainstorming. and when they were doing that, that's that moment of clarity, right? So this was March, 2020, and I have to be honest, I'm starting my own business. And like within that, that week, everything started rolling and the association of my profession said, are you sure that's a good [00:09:00] idea to open a business in a pandemic?

My whole body was like, yes. So, like my old self would listen to this authority figure and, and question myself. But since I have, you know, grown the intuition and trust it more than anything else in the world, it was clear, yes. Do that. Like it's the best time to do this. And here we are five years later and my business is growing each year, like every year it's, going in, in the direction that I, want it, and again, the sole business sole income of my house.

Mm-hmm. Right.

Anik Malenfant: That full body. Yes. Despite everyone telling you no, that's intuitive discernment in action and what Chrissy's about to share next is going to change how you think about your business finances forever.

It's reading a deeper layer of information that spreadsheets can't capture. Market timing, energy readiness, alignment. And five years later, Chrissy's business [00:10:00] is the sole income for her family growing every year. And that's not luck. That's trusting your body's wisdom, even when it doesn't make sense on paper.

Oh, right. Let's keep going, because what Chrissy shares next about how she actually reads numbers is going to blow your mind.

Chrissy Hollis: So there's a few things that came up for me. When you were talking, if it's okay to share.

Anik Malenfant: Absolutely.

Chrissy Hollis: Um, So intuition can be very subtle and a lot of clients I work with, it is subtle because they have all this noise coming at them. All this living from the outside, looking for the outside to know what to do.

So the intuition's always there. If it's a whisper, if it's a nudge, whatever, however it shows up for you. And when I work with them, I help them clear that noise just through discussion, just through like a normal conversation. And I don't call it, let's find your intuition. Like we just have a conversation.

And by the end of it [00:11:00] they're like, I knew I had to do this the whole time and I've been blocking myself in doing this because of this, and this, because of the noise. Right? And the more that you listen to the subtlety of the intuition, the clear and the louder it gets, and the core values and the mission and the vision.

Those are tools to clear the noise. Mm-hmm. To hear your intuition. 'cause your intuition is your soul's whisper to yourself, your alignment, your authenticity, and you're in the business that you're in, in the role that you're in. So to be you to radiate you within that. So you need to be able to hear that.

So like you say, the core values, the mission, the vision, just keep coming back to it. Because when those are aligned with the core you and you keep coming back to them then the path just reveals. And when we talked about it, the beginning of the show about external matrix, right? External [00:12:00] matrix, you can still have those goals.

And I think that they're important. The thing is, the path to get there is what we're just talking about. You'll get there quicker. And gracefully and easefully. More so than looking to the outside and the experts and the trends and what everybody's doing to get there. Right? So I think external matrix is important.

Numbers are important. Like we mentioned right before we hopped on, I feel numbers are a structure to ignite your intuition, to navigate decisions. It just gives you a picture where things are at, you know, where you need to go. So use your intuition. It is like a map, right? And you get to drive the directions to where you want it to go, right?

So I think that's super, super important, that it is subtle and it is subtle for me once in a while as well, right? But I've practiced so much that I know the difference between a whisper and a should. Mm-hmm. Right.

Anik Malenfant: And [00:13:00] when I reflect back to my managers, the ones the best stock pickers, the best analysts, the best estate planners. They had to read between the lines of the financial statements.

I remember when, I believe it was Enron came through and we're like, one of my managers said, we are not touching that with. You know, a 10 foot pole Enron all the numbers were glorious. Of course it was defunct and kind of a scam and all the things right? and the mortgage backed securities, everybody jumped on board.

'cause there were huge profits again.

The managers that I worked with really leaned back and were like, Ooh, you know, it feels too good to be true.

There's something just that feels off about it. I bet you, you can look at a client's balance sheet and you see beyond numbers the story

Chrissy Hollis: Yes, totally. Yeah. I can read it and exactly where they're blocking themselves or the pattern that's running in their business And that cuts the fear

so I work with a lot of [00:14:00] businesses that are sort of in a, either in a cashflow crunch or, you know, the numbers aren't quite where they want them. So that's vulnerable, right. And to admit that to someone and say like, I need help.

I need to see something that , I can't see myself right now. And when we dig in and when I show them and obviously state that the numbers are just stating where you are at today. This is your starting point, that is it. Mm-hmm. Right. And once they know it though, like you can actually see their nervous system settle a little bit.

And one thing that keeps coming up that I, I feel like I need to say is that sometimes the Yes. The full body Yes. Or the whisper Yes. Or the nudge turns out to be a difficult situation. We think that it should be grace and ease and simple and flowy. I don't know how many times my hell Yes has given me a difficult situation. It's exhilarated me so quickly from that difficult situation. Like, for [00:15:00] example, I decided to grow the branch of CFO in my business. So an old client shows up and she was my first client ever five years ago. And she quickly showed me what I did not want to my business.

Well, she's back five years later for a different service, and she's quickly showing me what I don't want in this service. Mm-hmm. So by one client, I figured out exactly how I want this offer to be, and the next client that I signed on was exactly what I wanted to do. Right.

Anik Malenfant: Exactly. An intuitive yes, doesn't mean it'll be easy. It means it'll be worth it. And sometimes the hardest conversations are the ones that set you free.

Chrissy Hollis: Yes, and I have a tangible example from that. I am navigating it. Very grounded and peaceful and clear, even though I'm having hard conversations. Right. So like all that hardness you're talking about, it doesn't happen all the time when you're using your intuition. But it does happen. But when you actually listen, I'm [00:16:00] navigating my world, my business with more peace than I've ever had in my entire life.

I actually know what joy is now. I didn't think I could actually find joy life, but I know what it is now, and it's great to keep it, to keep my peace, to have that joy. I still have to have those hard conversations. Yeah. I still have boundaries and I still have to own my habits. If I were to get up and just have coffee and start my day, oh, and I hydrate first too.

Right? Hydrate when I walk and if I just started with coffee, I'd be al jittery. My anxiety would be high. I wouldn't be able to deep listen to my clients. I would be on the surface instead of being able to see the root to really help them. It would be a whole other business and world if I didn't own that.

I mean, it's much easier just to get outta bed and make the coffee, right? But that's, you know, just a tangible point to bring that home.

Anik Malenfant: Okay, I'm gonna give you a line right now that I want [00:17:00] you to screenshot and send to every professional, you know. I get more done now in less time than I ever did in the grind. That's what Chrissy just said, and it sounds impossible, right? How can you be more productive when you're spending time walking around barefoot, hydrating, eating breakfast before you even start working?

Shouldn't you be grinding harder if you want better results? Here's what most people don't understand about pillar number three. Energetic alignment. When you start your day grounded, your nervous system has capacity. You can deep listen to your clients. You can see the root problem, not just the surface symptoms.

You can have those hard conversations without getting triggered. And when you start your day off with coffee and panic, when you skip the walk and go straight to your to-do list, your nervous system is already in fight or flight. Every decision that [00:18:00] you make from that place will be reactive, not strategic.

And here's the kicker, you'll work twice as hard to get half the results because you're not actually thinking, you're just reacting. And I know that you know this, but when you are scrambling to get something done, you always find a way to mess it up, and then it takes you more time to fix it later.

Chrissy said something powerful. I navigate my world with more peace than I've ever had in my entire life. I actually know what joy is now. And then she said, I still have boundaries. I still have hard conversations. I still own my habits. This is the both, and that breaks people's brains Peace. Doesn't mean everything is easy.

It means you're grounded enough to handle what's hard.

That's sustainable success. That's what it looks like when you're working [00:19:00] from alignment instead of chasing it. Alright, let's keep going.

Chrissy Hollis: Below our neck is where the wisdom is.

We need the logical, we need the common sense, but we need the wisdom to run the show and have the logic, follow the wisdom

Yes. And this whole be of service thing, right? Mm-hmm. Let's, I wanna be of service. I had this whole conditioning my entire life that to be of service was to sacrifice myself. Mm-hmm. And the go, go, go the rat race, you know? Deplete myself before I could get vacation in a corporate job.

I don't deserve vacation until I'm depleted. Mm-hmm. That kind of thing. Well, I see now that the more grounded I am and the more clear and the more peaceful I'm in, and my nervous system has room because in go, go, go. Your nervous system has no room. You're in a tunnel. Mm-hmm. Right? You can't, you can't see out.

But the more that you can get outta that, that [00:20:00] tunnel and have that expansion within, then I'm more of service now than I've ever been. Right?

Yes.

Marker

Chrissy Hollis: Yeah. Ever since I was a kid, I always saw this vision of, as long as everybody was aligned with themselves, we're true to themselves, this whole world mm-hmm. Would be a well-oiled machine.

All we have to do is follow ourselves. But the test here is everything thrown at you is inviting you not to.

Right. Especially right now, no matter where I look, fear is people's opinions are coming at me, but also their opinions are rooted in fear. Like there's so much fear and scarcity out there that's coming at us right now.

So much invitation to not be aligned. But if we really think about it, if we're all core aligned with the core of ourselves, there's just prosperity and everything works. And like that to me is, it's a core belief of mine . [00:21:00] that if we do follow that, then we do have the world that we wanna see and we want to experience.

Right.

Anik Malenfant: Yes.

I love a conversation because what you shared is really deeply aligned with my vision of the world. The way that I see it is if everybody is. Really tuned into their passion, to their purpose and empowered individuals are what's gonna create the world that is gonna leave us excited to leave the world to our children.

And for me, it's like, can you just imagine a world where people are living in their highest joy and being their best selves? Like how would that change dramatically the landscape of the world that we see?

what

if a

Chrissy Hollis: corporation did that? Yes.

Right. The core, like I have goosebumps, right?

Like we talk a lot about leaving corporate, so I wanna make sure that people that are listening is knowing that corporate doesn't have to be like that. There are corporations out there that are functioning like we're [00:22:00] talking about, that well-oiled, aligned machine. Every single person in there is aligned with the mission, the vision that they're allowed to work, how they need to work with their energy.

They're in the right roles. Right. Like imagine, yeah, imagine the prosperity and how easily that would come like,

Anik Malenfant: and that's what really inspired the Your Soul-led Business podcast because I wanted to bring the conversation to industry, to corporations and really allowing them to see proof of concept that, hey, these are business owners and entrepreneurs and corporations that are using this model and creating true, sustainable success.

That is a win, win, win. And the old story of short-term gains for long-term pains. The current atmosphere that has created the quiet quitting movement and the highest level of disengaged employees, the [00:23:00] expensive cost of employee turnover and constant onboarding of staff and clients is killing the bottom line.

Marker

Chrissy Hollis: Yeah. And it comes back to intuitive discernment, core values. Right? So the moment that you're stepping outside of that to accommodate anyone

you are coming from a should so There are corporations that are burning out. Burnout is just total misalignment. And you can be misaligned in terms of grind or you can be a misaligned in terms of over accomodating employees, for instance it's the same pattern in a different costume.

Marker

Anik Malenfant: Now I wanna circle back around 'cause we've been really touching on the deconditioning of old paradigms. Yes. And you've talked about still deconditioning the finance world, which I totally relate to motherhood, which I get. And then also, and I've seen this a lot with my clients too, is even at income ceilings.

So what beliefs are you still actively unlearning right now and how has that process [00:24:00] impacted your leadership as an entrepreneur?

Chrissy Hollis: So in the past, I'd say six months, what came into my awareness in terms of income ceiling is that I had a belief that I needed a man to make money.

Anik Malenfant: Ooh.

Chrissy Hollis: And also that the man was supposed to be the one to bring into the house, right?

So I was a woman, you know, it's almost like that story of like the prince coming to save you sort of thing, ingrained, right? So when I realized the past blocks or partnerships that I've done, I've had this belief that I'm a woman and I can't do it on my own, right? And since I've got out of that, my business again is going to increase in revenue over last year.

So like every year I am, I'm having that increase, but this will be, I, I feel the biggest jump in the last five years. And also I've starting a new [00:25:00] income stream where I've actually decided to become an independent, so this, it's like financial advisor certificate, right?

So a lot of people partner with a brokerage or you know, that kind of thing. And it's clear that I'm to go about it independently and then decide on a case by case basis, am I to partner somebody? So, using my intuitive discernment, who do I need to bring into this transaction, right? To help me learn.

So instead of going into someone else's space, like I would've my whole life learn how they do it and then try to mirror that. I'm going to do it my way. So it's like breaking that pattern of I need something else or someone else to make money. Right. So that pattern has always slowed me down because I learn it their way, I implement it their way, and then I break it apart and do it my way.

Marker

Chrissy Hollis: Another thing that I did to break that I need a man to make money thing [00:26:00] is I started doing things that I can make money and not work at.

So investing for the first time in my life, right? Mm-hmm. So that's a revenue stream that doesn't need my time, but also I redefine another one that comes up a lot is my definition of rest.

Anik Malenfant: Yes. That's a huge one

Chrissy Hollis: definition of rest. I'm in a coaching program and I find coaching programs so that I can keep aware of what's blocking me, right?

Mm-hmm. So when somebody else can mirror it back to me, it helps, right? Because usually a block is not in your awareness, right? Yes. And so we're always actively looking for it, right? Mm-hmm. Self observation awareness is like one of my core values, right? So I'm constantly, you know, looking for those things and she challenged me.

Because I had told her, I was just, I'm tired all the time. I'm exhausted. Well, first of all, you're telling yourself that. Second, let's define your rest. So I had rest, like, I had to take a 20 minute nap, or I had to, you know, make sure I [00:27:00] slept eight hours. And when I started redefining it on moments of stillness, right, five minutes of really intentional stillness can change my entire day.

So it was just, you know, that those two things are the ones that I'm, busting through right now. But there's always that next, you know, that's what we're here on earth to experience is that next thing that needs to be evolved. It needs to be you know, for us to grow.

Like we're here to grow. That's what we're here to do, right?

Anik Malenfant: Love it. So I'm gonna do a couple of rapid fire questions for fun.

Some of them you've already answered. So let me go through these. Let's see. Best business decision that you've ever made.

Chrissy Hollis: Opening my business despite everybody telling me not to.

Anik Malenfant: I figured that was going to be it, but I wanted to bring that in. Yeah. Here's kind of a fun one. A spreadsheet or journal, which would you reach for first?

Chrissy Hollis: Journal.

Anik Malenfant: Yeah, me too. That's one of my [00:28:00] big one. And you've touched on this, but in overall, what would be your go-to practice when you feel out of alignment?

Chrissy Hollis: Bare feet on the ground. When I was raised with my children, I have to say this, people would laugh, like my slippers would come off, my socks would come off anytime I got fired up, feet on the ground.

Even under conference table, my shoes come off. Yes, feet on the ground.

Anik Malenfant: Love that. Love that. Don't be afraid to take your shoes off in the boardroom if you need to. If you need to. No. Would you share either a book, a quote, or a mantra that keeps you anchored?

Chrissy Hollis: Be still, no.

Anik Malenfant: Oh wow. Powerful.

What an incredible conversation. Chrissy Hollis, a chartered accountant, a CPA, someone who works with spreadsheets and balance sheets all day long. Just prove something that most people in business refuse to believe. Your intuition isn't separate from your strategy. It is your strategy. The [00:29:00] numbers tell you where you've been.

Your intuition tell you where to go next, and when you learn to read both, when you can look at a balance sheet and feel the energy behind it, that's when you become the kind of leader people wanna work with. That's when your business stops draining you and starts energizing you. Now, here's the thing.

Chrissy didn't figure this out by reading more books or taking more courses, she figured it out by recognizing the pattern that was keeping her stuck. The pattern of living by other people's expectations, the pattern of hustling through scarcity, instead of breathing through it, the pattern of defining herself by the numbers instead of using them as data.

And the moment she saw those patterns, she could break them. That is exactly what we are doing tomorrow, November 4th in my free VIP masterclass, the pattern breakthrough, we are going live for 90 minutes to identify your [00:30:00] specific patterns, the ones that are keeping you stuck at the same revenue level.

The ones that make you second guess every decision, the one that has you succeeding externally while unraveling internally. We're not just gonna talk about it, we are going to do live pattern breaking work together. This is where the real transformation happens, because once you see the pattern, you can't unsee it, and that awareness is your portal to freedom.

The masterclass is free. It's tomorrow November 4th, and you'll find the registration link in the show notes below. If you're Listening to this today, Monday, November 3rd, you still have time to register, so don't wait. Now if you wanna connect with Chrissy. If you're an entrepreneur who's ever felt nervous looking at your numbers. All of her links are in the show notes. Alright. Here's what I want you to take away. If you resonated with Chrissy's [00:31:00] story today, it's because somewhere within you, you know, there's a better way to do this.

A way where you don't have to choose between prosperity and peace, a way where your intuition and your strategy work together, not against each other. A way where you can be successful and fulfilled.

That's not fantasy, that's a framework. And tomorrow I'm gonna show you how to build it. I'll see you at the masterclass. Now next week we're diving into pillar number three, energetic alignment because you can have all the clarity in your values, a sharp intuition, and perfect strategy, and still be exhausted.

Until then, trust your intuition, take aligned action, and keep leading with soul.

[00:32:00]
